Did you watch the recent TV show Patrick Melrose on Sky Atlantic? I just caught up with it all at the end of last week. And whilst I would highly recommend it, it won't be for everyone as it deals with triggers; addiction, abuse and trauma.
"Based on the novels by Edward St Aubyn, this five-part drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch hilariously skewers the upper class as it tracks his journey, from a traumatic childhood through to adult substance abuse and, ultimately, towards recovery."
I cannot promise No Spoilers, as I want to discuss a key theme in the story, so if you have not seen it yet stop now.
Those who know me, know I really like Benedict Cumberbatch. I think he's incredibly talented and very good looking. (Well I do have a cat named after him!) Lol! But despite my bias I think he portrays Patrick very well. There's a moving humour in moments, whilst heart-touching, soul truths in others. A difficult task in only five episodes.
As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, the impact shown throughout Patrick's life and how he processes the trauma rang true to me. The fear to tell anyone and the struggle to understand what is happening were issues I also struggled with. As the story moves on, seeing a journey towards recovery was hopeful, but not done with ease. Cleverly riding the highs and lows.
One thing I wish to make clear is that unlike Patrick, my mother was not negligent. I kept my mother in the dark about what I went through for 19 years. This I did to protect her and me. And when I did tell her, she could not have reacted better or been more supportive.
I don't know whether to say I 'enjoyed' this show as such, but it was very provocative and well made. I would watch it again. I have always enjoyed difficult subject matter, being put in the positions of different characters can be very eye opening.
