Yesterday I had a gym induction, this was through the mental health team as mentioned in my Body Image blog post. The guy was really nice and non-judgemental. He works with many people who are referred to him for all kinds of medical reasons.
I was confident swimming was the best place to start, to get me moving and reduce the risk of injury. I was surprised at the other things he recommended: bike, hand bike, yoga, pilates and dance class. I felt that I was capable of turning this situation with my weight around.
So we got me all set up with membership etc. and then I went for a swim. It was like "riding a bike"! I haven't been swimming for about 8 years, but it felt so natural and even with the extra weight, I felt my technique was pretty good. Growing up I swam a lot: taking lessons, swimming for fun, even training in life saving. I've always enjoyed being in the water and it felt great to be back.
I finished off with a Jacuzzi and then sauna. Leaving the centre I felt empowered and ready to make this change for the better. It's the first step on a big journey and I'll keep you posted with my antics and exploration of all the gym has to offer.
Today I'm having a rest day, so just a walk, I can definitely feel my arms and legs were used yesterday!
