I love a good podcast! It's the best way to pass the time when walking, sitting on a bus, doing housework, anything really.
I was late to the party (as usual), my sister got me started with Serial which I loved. Season One had me hooked! I whizzed through the two seasons and was desperate to find new shows to tune in to. I wasn't really sure where to start, so it came down to trial and error.
I've heard some great shows and some that I gave up on very quickly. I also got great recommendations from friends and family. So to save you some effort, here are my top 10:
10 - Spark - True Stories Live - There are only three rules at Spark: It must be true, It must be your own story, and It must be under five minutes long. With a different theme each time, strangers share moments from their lives. The aim is always to connect people through true stories. A nice easy podcast to dip in and out of. With most episodes about 15 minutes long, it's great when you're short on time.
9 - The Guilty Feminist - A forum to discuss the big topics all 21st century feminists agree on, whilst confessing our “buts” – the insecurities, hypocrisies and fears that undermine our lofty principles. Hosted by Deborah Frances-White and guest, sometimes serious and enlightening, often hilarious. "I’m a feminist, but this is only number 9 on my list".
8 - Song Exploder - A podcast where musicians take apart their songs, and piece by piece, tell the story of how they were made. Hosted by Hrishiskesh Hirway, with guests including Björk, U2, Metallica, Solange, and over a hundred more. The wide spectrum of music genres covered makes each episode unique and inspiring.
7 - Oprah's SuperSoul Conversations - AHA! Moments in the palm of your hand. Oprah's learned some of her most meaningful spiritual lessons from SuperSoul Sunday. Now those interviews are available as a podcast series. I'm pretty new to this series, but i started with two episodes based on Happiness recommended to me.
6 - Homecoming - A scripted series, starring Catherine Keener, Oscar Isaac, David Schwimmer, Amy Sedaris, and David Cross. Homecoming centres on a caseworker at an experimental facility, her ambitious supervisor, and a soldier eager to rejoin civilian life. This was my first venture into a podcast drama and through the use of telephone calls and recorded therapy sessions the tale is woven, utterly gripping.
5 - 99% Invisible - 99% Invisible is about all the thought that goes into the things we don’t think about - the unnoticed architecture and design that shape our world. Roman Mars has created over 300 episodes covering: Airport design, What happened to the laugh track? Barcodes and The worst smell in the world.
4 - The Dead Authors Podcast - Legendary time-travelling writer H.G. Wells (Paul F. Tompkins) welcomes literary giants to the 21st Century, for a lively discussion in front of a live audience. Unscripted, barely researched, all fun! My favourite guests include Aesop, Tennessee Williams & Plato.
3 - Criminal - A podcast about crime. Stories of people who’ve done wrong, been wronged, or gotten caught somewhere in the middle. Phoebe Judge has an effortless manner which draws you right into the centre of her investigations. Putting both the listener and her interviewees at ease, her soothing voice is enthralling and gripping. A stand out episode for me was "He’s Neutral" about a pretty “live and let live” kind of guy who finally got fed up and took matters into his own hands.
2 - Mystery Show - Starlee Kine solves mysteries in this 6 episode podcast. You'll fly through the episodes, I desperately wish there were more! Each one tackles a new mystery which will grip you from start to end and leave you with a feeling of wonderment.
1 - Reply All - Reply All is a podcast about the internet, hosted by PJ Vogt and Alex Goldman. Both fascinating and hilarious, each episode covers a new topic from puzzles, problems needing solved, to the latest news. My favourite part of the show is the occasional Yes-Yes-No segment - Genius!!
